Every year the “Fuorisalone” -the event related to Milan’s Salone del Mobile– gives a great chance to take good pictures, by portraying creative objects of unconventional design, color and shapes. Artworks are already fine by themselves …so half of the photograper work is automatically done 🙂

Table top is formed by fifteen slide puzzle pieces. These pieces can slide until the lines of the wood fit exactly together (table top comes from a single wood piece, effect is very nice to be seen). Underneath each piece, there is space to store objects: a tidy table above, all objects below.
Also the stool works on the same principle, but…
…what’s the right color?
Main problem to face during Fuorisalone -for a photographer, of course…- is probably color balance.

Every stand has its own artificial light, that gives “false” color response if not considered. Better way to solve this problem is by using a small white (or gray) paper, and perform color balance on it before shooting.
Here there is a brief description of how custom white balance works (in 2 words: you use a sample white paper to tell the camera “THIS is white, calibrate on it before taking picture”). The rear side of an artist business card is perfect as a white reference; no need to use official Kodak gray paper… and doing this way… you reuse & recycle, too 🙂
Above picture on lthe left was shot in AWB (Automatic white balance) mode, the one on the right was taken using custom WB setting.

Well, I probably forgot do trim white balance before the shot on top of this article, but I like the image this way, with warmer colors… in the end I’m not the offical photographer who needs to faithfully reproduce artwork color…
What went wrong in this shot? I used a too big aperture value, resulting in reduced depth of field (here’s an article about depth of field). Only the cars on the right are well focused.
The small distance from the subjet enhances this loss of sharpness. This image is good only at low resolution; by enlarging it, poor sharpess will become evident.
